Montenegro sees more visitors than residents over weekend; Croatian PM urges calm after border queues
Montenegrin police reported that between July 31 and August 2, 632,766 travelers crossed the country's borders, surpassing the population, while queues stretching over 20 kilometers formed on the Croatian border.
Montenegro's police have announced on social media that between July 31 and August 2, the country's borders were crossed by 632,766 travelers and 146,147 vehicles.
For comparison, according to the 2023 census, Montenegro has 623,633 inhabitants. This means that the number of people entering the country over the weekend exceeded the country's own population, as reported by the portal "rmf24.pl".
Croatia's Prime Minister has called for calm after 40,000 tourists reportedly got stuck in 10-hour traffic jams near the Montenegrin border. The situation was particularly difficult at the Montenegro-Croatia border, where lines of vehicles on the Croatian side exceeded 20 kilometers. Travelers had to wait for border control for more than 10 hours. During the heat, local residents distributed water to drivers and passengers and allowed them to use toilets. There were also reports of cases where people needed medical assistance due to the difficult conditions.
The highest traffic intensity was at the border with Serbia. The most travelers were served at the Dobrakovo border crossing point, located on the Serbia-Montenegro border, where 80,694 travelers were recorded. High congestion was also seen at other border crossings and airports: Debeli Brijeg — 78,800 passengers; Sukobin/Muriciani — 72,937; Dracenovac — 67,155; Božaj — 44,283; Podgorica Airport — 35,823; Tivat Airport — 32,532; and Kotor Port — 31,064 passengers.
