Debut with character: City win Manchester derby down to 10 men

Manchester City claimed a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday despite playing the majority of the match with 10 men. Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, yet City still secured all three points thanks to a goal from Erling Haaland.

Former player and pundit Danny Murphy said the result under those circumstances reveals a great deal about the squad's mentality, discipline and organisation. According to Murphy, while both sides had 11 players, United looked the better team, with a lively Marcus Rashford leading their threat, and the red card effectively halted United's momentum.

Adapting under pressure

After going down to 10 men, City had to abandon their usual possession-based approach and shift into a defensive game plan unfamiliar to them, but Murphy noted that the club's experienced international players appeared to relish the challenge rather than struggle with it. United created few clear chances in the second half, often shooting from difficult angles, and appeared to tire even with their numerical advantage.

A key moment came when manager Enzo Maresca brought on Iliman Ndiaye for Rayan Cherki at half-time, a substitution that added a new attacking and defensive dimension and played a part in the winning goal. Late in the game, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a crucial save to deny Bryan Mbeumo. Murphy also noted the winning goal may have warranted disallowal for a possible offside involvement, but overall rated City's defensive display as outstanding.
