On July 20, the first phone call took place between new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. During the conversation, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to close bilateral cooperation and to advancing the implementation of the Kensington Treaty of Friendship, signed in London on July 17, 2025, by Merz and Burnham's predecessor, Keir Starmer.

Addressing Russia's war against Ukraine, they agreed to continue providing comprehensive support to Kyiv and to intensify pressure on Russia. They also pledged to remain committed to serious negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.

Earlier on July 20, Burnham also held phone conversations with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy stated that he and the new British premier would meet soon. The call with Trump was Burnham's first as prime minister. During that call, Burnham emphasized his dedication to defense and security issues and stated that ensuring the security of the UK and its allies is a top priority.
