Merz: Russia Seeks to Destabilise Germany Every Day
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned of a large-scale threat to the country from Russia. He said Moscow is trying to destabilise Germany every day.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stressed that the country faces threats ranging from extremist parties at home to external adversaries. He singled out what he called a "large-scale threat" from Russia, saying it is trying to "destabilise Germany every day". The report comes from the Ukrainian outlet European Pravda, citing the German international broadcaster DW.
Merz posed the question of how to protect freedom and security in Europe amid growing threats from extremists inside the country and from foreign states.
Heightened alert for sabotage
According to the source, Germany is one of Ukraine's largest military and political allies and has in recent months been on heightened alert for acts of sabotage. This is especially so after a drone carrying explosives was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport. Berlin said Moscow was behind the attempted attack.
Latest incidents
In one of the most recent incidents, on Thursday police in the German state of Brandenburg arrested a Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of spying for Russia. In early August, a 33-year-old Ukrainian was arrested in Germany on suspicion of spying on a defence company.
