German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is preparing a handwritten letter for Donald Trump on the occasion of his 80th birthday. According to government sources in Berlin, the letter will be delivered to the White House by courier. On Monday, Merz will personally hand over a gift to the US president at the G7 summit in Évian, France. The nature of the gift has not yet been disclosed.

Trump will celebrate his birthday on Sunday in front of the White House in Washington, surrounded by numerous guests and a cage fight event that has drawn criticism for months. Immediately after, he will travel to the G7 summit in France, where he will meet Merz and other leaders of the Group of Seven.

This is not the first time Merz has given Trump historical gifts. During his first visit to the US almost exactly a year ago, Merz brought a copy of Trump’s grandfather’s birth certificate from Kallstadt in the Palatinate region and a golf club. In March, during his third visit to Washington since taking office, the chancellor presented a replica of the 1785 Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Prussia.

Recently, relations between Trump and Merz have cooled significantly after Merz sharply criticized Trump’s war with Iran. In response, Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Germany. A bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit is considered likely but not yet confirmed.

Earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki also announced he is preparing two gifts for Trump’s 80th birthday.
