Merino's late strike sends Spain past Portugal, ends Ronaldo's World Cup journey
Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in the World Cup round of 16 thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Mikel Merino, bringing an end to Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career.

Mikel Merino scored a dramatic winner in the first minute of injury time as Spain edged Portugal 1-0 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals on Monday. The match, played in front of 70,649 fans at the Dallas Cowboys' air-conditioned stadium, ended Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career at the age of 41, as the Portuguese star had confirmed on the eve of the game that this would be his last appearance on football's biggest stage.
Spain, who had not conceded a goal in the tournament, started brightly but failed to convert early chances. Dani Olmo set up Mikel Oyarzabal, but the forward shot wide with only goalkeeper Diogo Costa to beat. Portugal's best first-half opportunity came when Nuno Mendes forced a save from Unai Simon, and later a deflected shot from Mendes hit the crossbar.
The second half was a tense affair, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez made double substitutions in the 71st and 83rd minutes but kept Ronaldo on the pitch. The game seemed destined for extra time until a quick move in stoppage time: substitute Ferran Torres slipped the ball to Merino, who calmly finished to settle the contest.
Spain, European champions, will now face either the United States or Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday. They remain the only team in the tournament yet to concede a goal. For Portugal, the defeat ends their campaign and marks the end of an era as Ronaldo, now playing in Saudi Arabia, exits the World Cup stage for good.
