Merino the unlikely hero again – as Spain wait for Lamine Yamal to shine
Mikel Merino has once again emerged as an unlikely hero for Spain, while teenager Lamine Yamal has yet to rediscover his best form. Spain's coach praised Merino's versatility and commitment.

Merino: The pillar of the team
After the quarter-final victory, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente lauded Mikel Merino, describing him as „incredible.” De la Fuente highlighted Merino's many qualities, stating that he could have played for any team at the World Cup. He emphasised that Merino embodies the team's idea and model, and it is a pleasure to have him.
Merino himself admitted that a few months ago, being at the World Cup was unthinkable. „Now I am at the highest point, enjoying one of the happiest moments of my career,” he said after the win over Portugal. He recalled the difficult moments and the people who supported him when he struggled to believe he could be there.
A familiar hero for Arsenal fans
Merino's heroics are familiar to Arsenal supporters. The 30-year-old, typically a midfielder, has been used as a striker by manager Mikel Arteta. He first came off the bench to score twice against Leicester City in February last year. Former England striker Wayne Rooney commented that Merino is one of those players who arrives at the right time in big games. De la Fuente added that Merino can be the best striker and midfielder due to his understanding of the game.
Yamal still finding his rhythm
This tournament has seen big names like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland step up. However, Spain and Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal has not yet lit up the stage as he did during Euro 2024. In six games, he has scored only one goal. He has sometimes made wrong decisions, opting to shoot when a pass would have been better. Nevertheless, his dribbling and pace create space for teammates like Merino. Rooney reminded that even Messi makes wrong decisions at times, and Yamal came into the tournament injured and is still finding his rhythm.
