Mērsrags tragedy: police complete investigation into fatal crash that killed 10-year-old cyclist
State Police have concluded their investigation into a May crash in Mērsrags, where a driver overtaking a cyclist struck the boy, causing fatal injuries. The case has been forwarded to prosecutors to decide on criminal charges.
The State Police's Kurzeme regional department has completed its investigation into a tragic traffic accident that occurred on May 22 in the Mērsrags parish of Talsi municipality. A 10-year-old boy died as a result of the crash.
The accident happened around 11:20 a.m. on the local road Stende–Lauciene–Mērsrags. A man born in 1961, driving a Peugeot Partner and attempting to overtake a cyclist, failed to ensure it was safe to do so and did not maintain a sufficient distance, striking the bicycle ridden by a minor boy. The boy suffered severe injuries and died in hospital the following day.
Findings of the investigation
Police testing found that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. During the investigation, the man was granted suspect status, though he has no prior convictions.
Police noted that several provisions of traffic regulations were violated in this case — a driver must do everything possible to avoid endangering more vulnerable road users, including cyclists, must ensure safety before any maneuver, and must choose an appropriate following distance.
What happens next
The case materials have now been forwarded to the prosecutor's office to decide on initiating criminal prosecution. Under the Criminal Law, violating traffic rules in a way that causes a person's death carries a penalty of up to eight years' imprisonment, along with a driving ban of up to five years. The court will determine the final sentence.
State Police reiterate that no person is considered guilty until proven so through the legally established procedure.
