Merzliks faces uncertain NHL future, plans rehab in Switzerland

Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has finally gotten the career move he had been waiting for since January 2024, when a trade agreement was reached to send him away from the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, after landing with one of the NHL's most storied franchises, the Toronto Maple Leafs, his career in the league could just as easily be nearing its end.

The player now faces a recovery process expected to last several months. Notably, Merzlikins' previous contract with the Maple Leafs included a list of ten teams to which he could not be traded without his consent. Yet, while the trade to Toronto was being finalized, he reportedly did not hesitate to waive that clause.

Rehabilitation in Switzerland

Merzlikins plans to temporarily leave North America and continue his rehabilitation in Switzerland. Toronto reportedly has no objections to this arrangement.

What happens after his return remains unclear. Several scenarios are on the table, but only a few of them envision Merzlikins' future with the Maple Leafs, or in the NHL at all.

It is worth recalling that Merzlikins' NHL career originally began with a difficult stretch from which he managed a remarkable turnaround. Something similar would certainly come in handy for him now.
