Messi Sets New Record

Lionel Messi added another chapter to his World Cup legacy by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive matches in the tournament. The Argentine maestro netted his sixth goal of the 2026 edition during a 3-1 victory over Jordan in Arlington, Texas. Coming off the bench, Messi scored his 19th career World Cup goal, extending his record. Argentina, already through to the knockout rounds, finished top of Group J with a perfect three wins. They will face Cape Verde in the round of 32.

England Beat Panama, Top Group L

England secured first place in Group L with a 2-0 win over Panama at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, followed by Harry Kane five minutes later. Despite a labored performance, England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed confidence, saying the team will step up for the knockout phase. England's next opponent is DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Historic First for DR Congo

DR Congo advanced to the knockout stages for the first time in their World Cup history. They secured a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan in Atlanta, their first-ever victory in a World Cup match. The result placed them third in Group K, but they qualified as one of the best third-placed teams. Yoane Wissa scored twice, including a stoppage-time penalty.

Colombia Top Group K, Portugal Face Croatia

Colombia finished first in Group K after a 0-0 draw with Portugal in Miami. Portugal will now face Croatia in the round of 32, with a potential meeting against European champions Spain in the round of 16.

Croatia, Austria, and Algeria Advance

Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 in Philadelphia to secure second place in Group L. Croatia's win eliminated Scotland from the tournament, prompting Scotland manager Steve Clarke to resign immediately. In the final group matches, Austria and Algeria played a 3-3 draw, both advancing to the round of 32. The draw confirmed Iran's elimination as they could no longer be one of the best third-placed teams. Austria finished second in Group J and will face Spain, while Algeria will meet Switzerland.
