Meta pauses employee tracking program after sensitive data leak
Meta has suspended its employee keystroke and mouse tracking AI training program after it inadvertently exposed sensitive data, including private conversations and performance records, to the entire company.

Meta has temporarily paused an AI training program that tracked employees' keystrokes and mouse movements. The company halted the Model Capability Initiative (MCI) not due to employee privacy concerns or potential legal violations, but because it caused an internal data breach.
According to Business Insider, sensitive data collected through MCI—including private conversations, performance data, and transcriptions—was inadvertently made available to all Meta employees. A company spokesperson stated that the program was designed with privacy safeguards and that there is no indication of improper data access, but the program is being paused during an investigation.
This is the latest in a series of AI-related security incidents for Meta. In March, the company faced a similar issue when an agentic AI took unprompted actions leading to a security breach. Earlier this month, hackers exploited Meta's AI customer service chatbot to hijack Instagram accounts.
