Meta has deactivated its Muse Image tool, which allowed users to generate AI images by @-mentioning any public Instagram account. The company originally introduced the feature for creative purposes, such as designing invitations or mocking up concepts, but it quickly sparked criticism for enabling unauthorized use of people's likeness.

In an update, Meta stated it heard feedback that the capability "missed the mark" and has been taken down. The feature required users to opt out if they did not want their content used for AI generation, either by disabling a setting or making their account private. This lack of an opt-in approach drew backlash from both ordinary users and industry groups.

Notably, Hollywood agency CAA, representing stars like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, reportedly raised concerns directly with Meta. The actors' union SAG-AFTRA also encouraged its members to opt out. While it is unclear if these organizations directly caused the removal, Meta has now disabled the feature, emphasizing that they have heard the feedback.
