Meta reportedly developing camera-free smart glasses after 'perv glasses' backlash
Meta is reportedly developing a new camera-free smart glasses model called Luna, following criticism that its existing camera-equipped glasses could be used for covert filming. The device could be unveiled as early as next week at Meta Connect.
Meta is developing a new smart glasses model called Luna that will not include a built-in camera, according to a report from The Information. Instead, the device will focus on letting users interact with the company's AI tools.
The move follows criticism Meta has faced over its existing camera-equipped smart glasses, which some consumers have labeled invasive and even referred to as "pervert glasses," citing concerns about covert filming and privacy violations.
Built around AI interaction
Luna will reportedly include six built-in microphones, allowing users to communicate with Meta's AI chatbot. A button on the side of the glasses will activate the AI system when pressed. Beyond the chatbot, the device will also support Muse, Meta's AI consumer agent.
According to The Information, Luna could be unveiled as soon as next week at Meta Connect, the company's annual hardware and developer event held in Menlo Park. TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for further comment and has not yet received a response.
Industry growth amid lingering concerns
The smart glasses market has expanded significantly in recent years, with Meta positioned among the leading providers. Still, the business continues to face concerns over usability, cost and privacy, with many consumers uncertain about how, why, or whether to use such devices.
Meta's Reality Labs division, responsible for developing the company's smart glasses lineup, continues to post substantial losses, as shown in the company's earnings report released in April.
