Meta's AI app Muse reaches 10 million U.S. downloads in 40 days

Meta's AI companion app Muse has been downloaded 10.9 million times since its September debut, 10.2 million of them in the U.S. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower says only 12 mobile apps have hit that mark within 40 days.

Muse, the new artificial intelligence (AI) app from Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has reached 10 million U.S. downloads within its first 40 days on the market. Data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower shows the app has been downloaded 10.9 million times since its September debut, with 10.2 million of those in the United States. That puts Muse among only 12 mobile apps to reach such a mark so quickly.

Sensor Tower Senior Insights Analyst Kara Lee said the most recent app to do so was Meta's own Threads in July 2023. Most of the other apps that achieved this scale were mobile games, she noted.

Advertising and retention

Meta's success is tied to its ability to promote new apps across its other services, which have 3.6 billion daily active users combined. The company is also investing heavily in advertising: in October, Muse accounts for 39% of Meta's total ad spend, up from 23% in September. By advertising impressions, Muse is the 21st largest brand in the U.S. this month, compared with 73rd in September.

Muse is also keeping users better than rivals such as ChatGPT, Claude and Grok. In the U.S., 30% of users were still active after 7 days and 23% after 14 days, versus rival averages of 19% and 16%. Daily active users hit 2.5 million for the first time on October 16, up 15% week over week.

Comparison with rivals

ChatGPT saw 3.7 million U.S. downloads in its first 40 days, while Grok recorded 500,000 and Claude 200,000. Globally, ChatGPT came out ahead with about 15 million downloads, but the comparison is not like-for-like: Muse is currently available only in the U.S. and Canada, whereas ChatGPT drew users from markets such as Japan, Brazil and Germany. Japan accounted for 25% of ChatGPT's global installs in that period.

Muse has held the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store every day except October 19, when streaming app Kick briefly overtook it. It regained the top position on Tuesday. On Google Play, Muse has ranked first over the past 30 days.
