US technology company Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, said on Wednesday during its third-quarter earnings call that its AI agent app Muse has been adopted by more than 10 million users. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower had estimated the same figure earlier this week. CEO Mark Zuckerberg pointed to how people use the app and how much they spend through it.

Usage and purchases

Zuckerberg said about 25% of people who set up Muse now use it daily, which helps retention. Among engaged users who shopped via the agent, more than a quarter had an average purchase size above $200. Muse relies on a connector from financial technology company Plaid, which links payment apps to customers' bank accounts. Zuckerberg said Plaid told Meta it had not seen similar activity on any other service.

Personal productivity tasks, such as connecting the agent to email or calendars, are also popular. Zuckerberg said this suggests users trust the security setup, which includes "Muse Secure VM". A forthcoming "Muse Confidential VM" is meant to stop even Meta from seeing users' content.

Revenue and cost plans

Meta considers that Muse has reached product-market fit, so its focus will shift to scaling, increasing revenue and optimizing compute costs. The company forecasts that Muse will eventually earn more revenue per user than users of its family of apps do today, currently several hundred dollars annually.

Muse is to remain free for most users, with Meta keeping a percentage of commerce on the platform. Power users wanting the most advanced models or more tokens will pay. Zuckerberg said Meta is building capacity to serve over a billion people in the next few years and expects to improve Muse's cost efficiency more than tenfold next year.

Muse will also be central to Meta's smart glasses strategy. Reality Labs, the division behind smart glasses, VR and the metaverse, is expected to cut losses from $19.1 billion in 2025 to $15 billion this year. Zuckerberg also teased a "Muse network", where users' Muse agents could work with those of friends and family, and purchases would involve talking to a business's own agent.
