Metta and RFS draw 3:3 as RFS climbs to top of women's league table
Latvia's women's football league saw Metta and RFS draw 3:3, a result that lifted RFS to first place in the standings despite the team's title chances now being slim.
In Latvia's women's football championship, Metta and RFS drew 3:3 in a match where the home side twice took the lead.
RFS opened the scoring through Anastasija Čemirtāne in the tenth minute. But by the half-hour mark, Metta had gone ahead 2:1 thanks to goals from Elizabete Pelše and 17-year-old Keita Zviedre. The first-half stoppage time proved eventful: RFS player Emīlija Sofija Druviņa put the ball into her own net to make it 2:2, only for teammate Anastasija Vainere to immediately restore Metta's lead at 3:2.
In the second half, on RFS's first attack after the break, Ukrainian forward Olesja Malinovska scored off an assist from Čemirtāne to make it 3:3, a scoreline that held until full time despite continued RFS pressure.
The draw stands out against the backdrop of the teams' earlier meetings this season, when Metta had lost to RFS 0:4, 0:2 and 0:5. Metta's last points taken off RFS came in May 2024, a 3:1 win.
While the draw technically moved RFS into first place in the overall standings, the team's chances of holding onto that position and contending for the title have become minimal.
Looking ahead, next Saturday's Latvian Cup semifinals will see RFS face the combined Iecava/Olaine team, while Riga FC take on Metta later the same day. On September 23, Metta will travel to Mežaparks for a rematch against the league leaders.
