Microsoft Edge to phase out older extensions, cutting off uBlock Origin
Microsoft is gradually disabling Manifest V2 extensions in Edge, including the popular uBlock Origin ad blocker, following Google Chrome's earlier move. The consumer transition to MV3 should finish by the end of this year, with enterprise users affected starting early 2027.
Microsoft has announced that Edge will stop supporting the older Manifest V2 extensions platform, cutting off access to the popular uBlock Origin ad blocker and similar tools. The move mirrors what Google already did with Chrome earlier this year.
According to Microsoft, only 58 extensions in the Edge Add-On Store still have "meaningful usage" while running on MV2, and just three of those lack an equivalent version on the newer MV3 platform.
Options for affected users
People relying on these extensions can switch to alternatives such as uBlock Origin Lite, which runs on MV3. Another option is switching to a browser that still supports MV2 extensions, such as Opera, which has said it will keep doing so for as long as it remains technically feasible, or moving to Firefox.
Rollout timeline
Starting this month, Microsoft will gradually turn off remaining MV2 extensions by default, notifying users in advance and pointing them to recommended MV3 replacements where available. The changes will begin in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels before gradually expanding to the Stable channel. Microsoft aims to complete the transition for consumer users by the end of 2026, while managed devices will not be affected during this phase. Support for enterprise users will end in early 2027.
