Microsoft retires Mico from Copilot voice mode
Microsoft is removing Mico, the animated character from Copilot's voice mode, and moving it to its Learn Live platform. The change is part of broader plans to merge its Copilot apps.
Microsoft has decided to retire Mico, the animated yellow character used in Copilot's voice mode. According to a support page, Mico will move to Microsoft's Learn Live platform, where the avatar will supposedly have more to react to. The company first introduced Mico in October of last year as part of Copilot's voice mode. At the time, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman described the character as a way to give the chatbot an identity. Mico was designed to respond in real time using facial expressions and animations while users spoke to the AI assistant.
The decision adds Mico to a long list of retired Microsoft virtual helpers, including Clippy, Cortana, and Rover. Microsoft says Mico helped the company learn about warmth and expressiveness in AI conversations, and those lessons will shape future Copilot development. The removal from Copilot is happening gradually, in waves. This change comes as part of Microsoft's broader effort to merge its Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. It also follows an internal AI shakeup several months ago in which Jacob Andreou took over Copilot, while Mustafa Suleyman shifted to developing new AI models. No specific timeline was given for the full transition.
