On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Latvian Saeima Speaker Daiga Mieriņa met with Norwegian Ambassador to Latvia Ine Møreng, who was on a farewell visit to the parliament. Mieriņa thanked the ambassador for her active work in strengthening bilateral relations, particularly highlighting human rights and support for Ukraine. She also emphasized close contacts at the Nordic-Baltic (NB8) level.
The two sides discussed possibilities for closer cooperation in supporting Ukraine, including in the defense industry. Mieriņa highlighted a charity campaign organized in Latvia in cooperation with the Ukrainian NGO "Zemliachky," aimed at supporting women in the Ukrainian armed forces by providing necessary equipment, specifically designing uniforms to increase comfort and functionality for women serving on the front line.
The ambassador praised Latvia's role in exposing Russia's true nature internationally and helping Western countries better understand what it is like to live next to an aggressor state, sharing its historical experience of life under Russian occupation.
Mieriņa stressed the strengthening of defense capabilities, noting that both Latvia and Norway are on the eastern border of the EU and NATO, and must take responsibility for their defense. The meeting also covered opportunities for enhancing economic cooperation, with Mieriņa expressing appreciation for funding from the European Economic Area and Norway Grants.
Both sides discussed shared values and traditions, including the role of folklore in their cultures. Mieriņa congratulated Norway on the men's national football team's achievement of reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in history.
