Lithuanian border guards came under attack from a group of migrants who crossed into the country through a tunnel on the border with Belarus. The incident occurred on July 26 near the Kapciamiestis border station, according to the news portal Delfi, which first reported on Wednesday.

The State Border Guard Service had not previously made the attack public. According to the report, border guards had detected the digging of a tunnel under the state border and decided to wait for the migrants to emerge. When the first people came out of the tunnel, four officers detained them and put them in handcuffs. Shortly afterwards, roughly 20 more migrants appeared from the tunnel and attacked the officers, forcing them to retreat. The migrants, including those who had already been handcuffed, escaped back into Belarus.

The border service had earlier announced the discovery of the tunnel but did not disclose that its officers had been attacked. Spokeswoman Lina Laurinaityte said on Wednesday that information about the assault would be released once authorization was given by the prosecutor's office leading the pre-trial investigation. She added that neither the officers nor the migrants sustained any injuries.
