Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal of the Reform Party has confirmed that he will put forward former Defence Forces commander Martin Herem as his choice for the country's new defence minister.

According to Michal, the Reform Party's board will formally approve the candidate on Tuesday, September 15, at a board meeting starting at 8:00. By that time, Herem is expected to have returned from abroad and will be able to take part in the meeting.

Experience cited as key factor

Michal said Herem's experience and his understanding of what needs to be improved in the management of the Ministry of Defence speak in his favour. The prime minister added that Herem is most likely to become the new defence minister.

It had previously been known that Michal privately offered Herem the position, but Herem himself has not yet officially accepted the offer.

The story is being updated.
