To mark the milestone, publishers released a special anniversary edition, and a temporary pop-up shop dedicated to the celebration opened at the Bikini Berlin shopping center in the German capital.
From harsh criticism to cult status
While the magazine and its characters are now regarded as cult classics, that was not always the case. When the first issue was published, comics as a genre were struggling to gain acceptance in Germany. Critics sharply attacked the colorful picture stories, warning of overly simplistic character portrayals, the dulling of the mind, and emotional decline. There were even attempts to have the Mickey Mouse character banned through legal action.
According to Bild, almost none of that earlier criticism has survived to the present day. The residents of Duckburg — the fictional comic-strip town home to Mickey Mouse and the rest of the cast — have long been among the country's best-known and most beloved comic characters.
