SBU official suspected over Mila ammunition blast that killed 35 released on bail
An official suspected of negligence in maintaining an ammunition depot near the village of Mila, where a Russian strike killed 35 people, was released on bail last weekend. The bail amounted to nearly 500,000 hryvnias.
The head of a supply unit within Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), who was responsible for setting up and operating an ammunition depot near the village of Mila in the Kyiv region, was released from custody on bail last weekend. Sources within law enforcement confirmed this to Ukrainian media. The bail was set at approximately 499,200 hryvnias.
Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General's Office had earlier notified the official of suspicion over improper storage of ammunition in Mila, where a Russian strike killed 35 people.
Background on the Mila strike
On the evening of August 28, powerful explosions rocked the Bucha district of the Kyiv region: a fire broke out in a warehouse, and traffic was blocked along a stretch of the M-06 Kyiv–Chop highway between the 15th and 32nd kilometers. Initial reports put the death toll at 38, but law enforcement has continued refining the figures, which were later revised down to 35.
Commenting on the incident, President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that ammunition must not be stored near residential areas. He also said the first strike on Mila hit defense forces' storage facilities that should not have been located there. Ukraine's General Staff, addressing the deaths caused by the Russian strike, stated that the root cause of the tragedy was Russia.
