Intoxicated Drone Pilot Caught Near Riga Castle by Military Police
The Military Police detained an intoxicated individual for illegally flying a drone near Riga Castle on Saturday. The pilot faces a fine of up to 725 euros.

Over the weekend, the Latvian Military Police apprehended a person suspected of operating a drone under the influence of alcohol in a restricted flight zone near Riga Castle. According to the National Armed Forces, an unauthorized drone flight was detected in a no-fly zone on Saturday. Officials from the Military Police identified the drone pilot and initiated procedural actions as prescribed by law.
The incident occurred on the Daugava embankment at 11. Novembra Krastmala, near the statue of Lielais Kristaps, where the pilot was seated on a bench. Two Military Police officers carried out the detention. At the scene, they completed a flight data and pilot information form, obtained a statement from the individual, and provided information about drone operation restrictions and relevant regulations. The National Armed Forces noted that a warning sign indicating the drone flight prohibition was posted in the area.
Under the law, operating a drone without adhering to the requirements of a specific geographical zone can result in a warning or a fine of up to 725 euros for an individual. The exact penalty in this case has not yet been determined. The decision on the administrative penalty will be made after evaluating all factual and legal circumstances, including the nature of the violation, the person's character, financial status, and any aggravating or mitigating factors.
Additionally, as the Military Police officers suspected that the individual might be under the influence of alcohol, a municipal police patrol was called to the scene.
