Military analyst: front line in Ukraine shifting gradually, no major breakthrough in sight
Latvian National Armed Forces Major Jānis Slaidiņš says the current fighting in Ukraine shows only tactical-level gains for both sides, with no clear advantage or breakthrough expected.
Fighting along Ukraine's front line remains intense, but no recent developments suggest either side is achieving a major breakthrough or rapid advance deep into enemy territory. This assessment was given by Major Jānis Slaidiņš of Latvia's National Armed Forces and the National Guard staff, speaking on TV24's program on the war in Ukraine.
Tactical gains on both sides
According to Slaidiņš, there is currently no basis to claim either warring side holds a decisive advantage. The situation remains fluid: Ukraine is losing territory in some areas of the front while regaining ground elsewhere. The analyst stressed that what is currently visible are only tactical-level successes rather than strategic-scale shifts.
Southern direction and Zaporizhzhia
Slaidiņš specifically pointed to Ukrainian successes in the southern direction, including in the Zaporizhzhia region, where Ukrainian forces have achieved certain results. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue active operations in other sectors of the front, meaning the overall picture cannot be simplified into one side steadily advancing while the other merely retreats.
No major breakthrough expected soon
Asked whether a significant breakthrough on the front could occur in the near future, the analyst did not consider such a scenario likely under current conditions. In his view, the nature of the fighting currently gives no grounds to expect large-scale encirclements or a rapid collapse of the front in any direction. Instead, territorial changes are occurring gradually, with one side advancing in one sector while retreating in another at the same time.
