Giant Great White Shark Baffles Scientists with Unusual Route

A great white shark weighing over 635 kilograms, named Breton and tracked since 2020, has deviated from the typical summer migration to Canadian waters and was last spotted off Florida's east coast, a rare location for the species at this time of year.

Most great white sharks migrate to cooler Atlantic waters near Canada during the summer. However, one individual, a shark named Breton weighing more than 635 kilograms, has chosen a completely opposite path, leaving scientists perplexed.

Breton was last recorded off the east coast of Florida, an area where great white sharks are rarely seen during this season. Researchers are trying to explain this unusual behavior.

Scientists from the organization OCEARCH suggest that Breton might be following schools of fish that inhabit deeper ocean layers. Although the surface water temperature off Florida currently reaches about 31°C, great white sharks regularly dive several hundred meters deep, where the water is significantly cooler.

"Sharks don't always follow the rules," OCEARCH researchers note, emphasizing that this atypical journey once again highlights how much remains unknown about great white shark migration patterns.

Breton has been tracked since 2020, and his movements will continue to be closely monitored to gain a better understanding of the species' behavior.
