Despite stricter penalties already in place, the number of drunk drivers in Latvia remains high. To address this issue, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice are reviewing new initiatives, as reported by the program "Let's Discuss in the Evening."

Among the discussed measures is the possibility of holding passengers liable who voluntarily get into a car with a drunk driver. Additionally, mandatory psychological consultations for the offenders themselves are being considered. These solutions are currently under discussion and no final decisions have been made yet.

The ministers emphasize that the current system is insufficient, as punitive measures alone cannot significantly reduce the number of drunk drivers. The new measures could focus on both prevention and behavioral correction of the offenders.
