Latvia's Justice Minister Edvards Smiltēns, of the United List party, has issued a social media comment addressing recent unrest at the new Liepāja Prison.
The minister stated that the prison building was constructed in line with both Latvian and international requirements. According to him, the facility's purpose goes beyond simply keeping people locked behind closed doors.
Security and lawfulness
Smiltēns emphasized that the new prison aims to ensure a secure and lawful process for serving sentences, while also focusing on the resocialization of convicts. He explained that inmates' rights are respected at the facility, but no concessions will be made regarding security requirements.
