US Senator Lindsey Graham, known as one of the most vocal supporters of Ukraine in Washington, died at 71 after a sudden illness. His office announced on Sunday that the senator passed away on Saturday evening, providing no further details about the circumstances.

Just on Friday, Graham was in Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following the meeting, the senator announced that an agreement had been reached with the White House on a bill to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.

Graham had long been a prominent backer of Ukraine in the US Congress. He advocated for a stronger US stance against Russia even before the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and repeatedly visited Ukraine after the full-scale war began. He co-authored several bills supporting Ukraine and strengthening sanctions against Russia.

Initially a critic of Donald Trump, Graham later became one of the former president's most consistent allies in the Senate. He was also known for his firm foreign policy positions, including support for Israel and military action against Iran.

Graham represented South Carolina in the US Senate since 2003. Before that, he served in the House of Representatives from 1995.
