Former Wolves captain Mike Bailey dies at 84

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Mike Bailey has died at the age of 84 following a long illness. He joined Wolves in 1966 and went on to become one of the club's most capped players.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Mike Bailey has died aged 84 after a long illness, the club has announced.

The midfielder began his playing career at Charlton Athletic before signing for Wolves in 1966, where he went on to become a key figure over the following years. He made 436 appearances for the Molineux club and scored 25 goals.

Club and international success

During his time at Wolves, Bailey lifted the League Cup in 1974, two years after helping the side reach the Uefa Cup final. In his final season with the club, he also helped Wolves secure promotion back to the top flight of English football. He was capped twice for the England national team.

Later career

After leaving Wolves, Bailey had a brief spell in the North American Soccer League with Minnesota Kicks before returning to England, where he became player-manager of Hereford. He later went on to manage Charlton, Brighton, Greek club OFI and non-league side Leatherhead.
