Renowned Liepāja motocross racer Normunds Ērkulis dies; reports point to violent death

Normunds Ērkulis, one of the most prominent figures in Liepāja's motocross history, has died at the age of 66, the Latvian Motorsport Federation (LaMSF) confirmed. He passed away on August 28.

LaMSF's veterans commission expressed condolences to his family and the wider motorsport community. A farewell ceremony is planned for September 4 at 3 p.m. at the Līva Cemetery chapel in Liepāja.

Possible violent circumstances

Some media outlets report having received unofficial information suggesting Ērkulis may have been killed near Cīrava, allegedly stabbed multiple times with a knife.

The State Police confirmed that on August 29 they received a report of a deceased person found in Laža parish, South Kurzeme municipality. A man born in 1960 was found at the scene without signs of life. A criminal proceeding has been opened, and one person has been detained and remanded in custody. Police have not released further details, citing the interests of the investigation.

Sporting career

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ērkulis won the Latvian motocross championship title six times. He also won a USSR youth championship, took silver in the adult competition, was named the best rider in the Baltic republics, and won medals in all three engine-class categories at the USSR army championships.

His achievements were closely tied to Liepāja's legendary motorsport club "Atlantika" — in 1977 he became individual USSR champion. Ērkulis also appears in earlier records of Latvian motorsport history: a 1973 newsreel shows him competing in the "Golden Moped" competition at age 13, winning at the Bieriņi motocross track in Liepāja.
