Norway's King Harald V dies at 89, son becomes King Haakon VIII
Europe's oldest monarch, King Harald V of Norway, has died at age 89, the palace announced Friday. His son automatically ascends the throne as King Haakon VIII.
The Norwegian royal palace announced on Friday morning that King Harald V had died at 89. He was Europe's oldest reigning monarch and, unlike several aging counterparts elsewhere on the continent, never abdicated.
Born in 1937 in Asker near Oslo, Harald was the first Norwegian prince born on home soil since 1370. At age three, as Nazi Germany occupied Norway during World War II, he fled with his mother and sisters first to Sweden and then by boat to the United States, while his father and grandfather went into exile in Britain alongside Norway's government. The family reunited in Norway in June 1945.
Harald ascended the throne in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, adopting the family motto "All for Norway." His reign coincided with an economic boom driven by Norway's oil and gas industry, and he worked to modernize the monarchy while keeping it largely symbolic, with real power resting in the elected parliament.
As a young man, Harald spent nine years resisting pressure to marry a European noblewoman, eventually winning his father's blessing to marry his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, a businessman's daughter. Their August 1968 wedding was celebrated by Norwegians, and Sonja was later embraced as queen. The couple had two children, Haakon and elder sister Märtha Louise.
Harald earned widespread respect for an emotional speech following the 2011 attacks by right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik, which killed 77 people, and for a 2016 address championing LGBTQ+ equality, refugees and religious tolerance.
The royal family faced unwelcome scrutiny in early 2026 when Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Harald's daughter-in-law, came under renewed attention over her past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, prompting an apology from her. Around the same time, her son Marius Borg Høiby was convicted of rape and sentenced to four years in prison.
After Denmark's Queen Margrethe abdicated in 2024, Harald affirmed he would honor his coronation oath for life. He was later hospitalized abroad on two occasions, receiving a pacemaker in Malaysia and treatment for a skin infection during a 2026 trip to Tenerife.
His son now automatically becomes King Haakon VIII.
