Russell began his career in the film industry as an executive producer on the 1981 slasher 'Hell Night.' He co-wrote the 1984 sci-fi adventure 'Dreamscape' before making his directorial debut with 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors' in 1987, a film he also wrote. That installment was praised for reviving the horror franchise.
In 1988, he directed a remake of the cult classic 'The Blob.' His breakthrough came with 1994's 'The Mask,' starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. The film was originally conceived as a horror movie, but Russell convinced the studio to take a comedic approach. It grossed over $350 million worldwide on a modest $18 million budget and earned an Academy Award nomination for its visual effects.
Russell later directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1996 action film 'Eraser' and the 2000 horror 'Bless the Child.' In 2002, he helmed 'The Scorpion King,' which marked Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's first leading role. His final film was the 2024 horror remake 'Witchboard.'
