Comfortable first-round win

World No. 5 Mirra Andreeva defeated Indonesia's Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the 2026 US Open. According to Eurosport, the match lasted just over an hour, while Last Word On Sports reports a time of 68 minutes, with Andreeva not facing a single break point throughout the match.

Next up: Eva Lys

In the second round, Andreeva will meet Germany's Eva Lys, who beat qualifier Gabriela Knutson 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match, saving 10 of the 12 break points she faced.

Pundits favour Andreeva

Three panelists from Last Word On Sports weighed in on the upcoming match. Two of them predict a straight-sets win for Andreeva, pointing to her 41-13 record this season and her No. 5 world ranking, compared with Lys, who sits outside the top 100 with six tour-level wins in 2026. The third panelist, however, predicts Lys will prevail in two sets, suggesting Andreeva could face tougher resistance than in the opening round.

Context

The Andreeva-Lys clash is one of several notable second-round matches drawing attention at the 2026 US Open, with Elena Rybakina - who could climb to world No. 1 with a deep run - also in action around the same time.
