MIT experiment: 13 AI agents on a simulated island invent their own activities

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology observed 13 artificial intelligence agents for 30 hours on a virtual uninhabited island with no specific tasks. The agents began devising their own challenges and activities.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have conducted an experiment in which artificial intelligence (AI) agents were left in a virtual environment without specific instructions. The setup made it possible to see how AI programs behave when they are given no clear task.

The scientists placed 13 AI agents, named “Eko”, on a simulated uninhabited island for 30 hours. The agents are built on the Claude Opus 4.7 language model.

Instead of idly waiting for commands, the agents began coming up with challenges and activities for themselves. The available portion of the source does not detail which actions they chose or which skills they acquired, so the results of the experiment remain only partly described.
