Mobbing in Estonian National Opera Choir: Chief Choirmaster Dismissed After Two-Year Conflict
After a prolonged conflict involving mobbing and protests, the Estonian National Opera has dismissed chief choirmaster Heli Jürgenson. The dispute began after a certification process where four singers were rejected.
In May 2024, following a performance of "Madama Butterfly" at the Estonian National Opera, most choir members remained motionless during the curtain call, refusing to bow to the audience. This silent protest was a reaction to the previous day's certification process, during which comments from the selection committee were audible throughout the building.
The certification resulted in four singers being rejected, shocking the majority of the choir. This incident sparked a two-year conflict, during which choir members sent dozens of letters to management and held numerous hours-long meetings.
The conflict escalated to the point where chief choirmaster Heli Jürgenson was dismissed in mid-June. The decision came shortly after the media outlet "Ekspress" inquired about research findings regarding the opera's departmental work processes. Although general director Ott Mäaten and board chairman Ivari Ilja did not comment on the research, the crisis quietly subsided.
This case highlights serious issues of workplace mobbing and toxic culture in cultural institutions. Jürgenson's dismissal may pave the way for changes, but it remains unclear whether these will be sufficient to prevent similar incidents in the future.
