Monaco beats Marseille to become sole leader with maximum points in Ligue 1
Monaco defeated Marseille's Olympique 2:0 at home, becoming the only club with six points and no goals conceded after two rounds of the French championship. Both goals were scored by German forward Paris Brunner.
The second round of France's top football division concluded with Monaco securing a confident 2:0 home win over Marseille's Olympique. Both goals came from 20-year-old German striker Paris Brunner, marking his first-ever goals in Ligue 1.
Brunner opened the scoring in the 13th minute, heading in a precise cross. Early in the second half, he doubled the lead by capitalizing on a positioning error by Marseille's defenders following a goal-kick, breaking through on the right flank, beating two opponents, and finishing accurately to make it 2:0.
Sole team with a perfect record
Thanks to this victory, Monaco is now the only club in the French league with six points from two matches, and the team has yet to concede a single goal. Paris FC has also kept a clean sheet so far, though it sits among five clubs with four points.
Last season, Monaco finished the championship in seventh place, five points behind Rennes and Marseille.
Brunner's path to scoring form
Brunner went scoreless in seven matches during his first season in France last year. Having come through Borussia Dortmund's youth academy, he gained his first taste of professional football in Belgium, spending one season there on loan from Monaco. In the summer of 2024, Monaco paid Dortmund four million euros to sign the forward permanently.
Other second-round results included a 2:2 draw between Lille and PSG, a 3:2 win for Rennes over Le Mans, and a 3:0 victory for Paris over Nice.
