Morgenshtern says he was offered return to Russia in exchange for Donbas trip or $1 million

Russian rapper Alisher Morgenshtern said in an interview with YouTuber Yury Dud that intermediaries connected to Russian authorities offered him a way back into the country if he publicly expressed support for the war.

According to the musician, the condition was some form of public act — either a trip to the occupied territories or a public apology. Morgenshtern said he refused, explaining that he doesn't believe he did anything wrong and has no wish to endorse the war. He noted that any visit to the Donbas amounts to a political statement, since "nobody just goes there."

A third option was also floated: paying money and doing nothing further. The intermediaries reportedly promised to settle matters with the authorities for $1 million.

Meeting at the Presidential Administration

Morgenshtern said his departure from Russia followed a meeting at the Presidential Administration, where he was threatened with a 15-year prison sentence and warned against "provocative actions" — citing, as an example, his joke about a "plastic cup and a cop."

Before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Morgenshtern had spoken approvingly of President Vladimir Putin's policies. He left Russia in November 2021 after the country's Investigative Committee opened a review into his work over possible drug propaganda.

In May 2022, Russia's Justice Ministry labeled him a "foreign agent." In 2024, a criminal case was opened against him for failing to meet obligations tied to that status, and he was added to the wanted list. In April 2026, a Moscow court fined him 7 million rubles in absentia over posts that lacked the required "foreign agent" disclaimer. His property in Moscow remains frozen.
