Mourinho reveals he nearly became Ferguson's successor at Manchester United in 2013
José Mourinho has revealed in his new Netflix documentary that a deal was already in place for him to join Manchester United in 2013, but he chose to return to Chelsea instead.
Portuguese coach José Mourinho has disclosed a previously little-known chapter of his career in his new Netflix documentary. After leaving Real Madrid, he had reached an agreement to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager.
A promise to Chelsea
Mourinho said that once his spell in Madrid ended, he signed a contract with United intended to see him take charge right after Ferguson's departure. He admitted the chance to lead such a prestigious club meant a great deal to him. In the end, however, he changed course and returned to Chelsea, where he had previously worked from 2004 to 2007, explaining that he had given the London club his word and decided not to break it.
Ferguson's recollection
Ferguson himself also recalled the episode in the documentary, saying Mourinho called him personally and explained his change of heart in an emotional conversation. Although disappointed, Ferguson said he understood and respected the Portuguese coach's wish to honour his promise.
The consequences for United
As a result, United turned to David Moyes as Ferguson's successor, but Moyes lasted less than a full season before being dismissed. Mourinho eventually arrived at Old Trafford in 2016, following Louis van Gaal's departure, spending roughly two and a half years there and winning the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield. Had Mourinho not chosen to stand by Chelsea in 2013, his partnership with United could have begun three years earlier.
