Motocross Legend Max Nagl Announces Retirement

German motocross rider Max Nagl, 39, has announced the end of his professional career, which spanned more than two decades in the sport's top classes. Over the years he competed in both the MX2 and MXGP world championships, collecting nine Grand Prix victories along the way.

Nagl raced in the MX2 championship from 2004 to 2006 before moving up to the MXGP class, where he competed from 2007 to 2019 and achieved his main career successes. In 2009 he finished as runner-up in the MXGP championship, then known as MX1, and in 2016 he took third place in the overall season standings. The high point of his career came in 2012, when he helped the German national team win the Motocross of Nations. He last competed in that event in 2024.

Injuries behind the decision

Explaining his decision, Nagl said it was driven mainly by his physical condition after years of accumulated injuries. He pointed to a serious crash this year at the German ADAC championship round in Tensfeld, after which, while still recovering, he also injured his knee. He said his strength is no longer at one hundred percent and admitted it might only return to around eighty percent. Nagl stressed that he only wants to race at full readiness and is not willing to risk his health given the years he still has ahead of him in other pursuits.

Looking ahead

Although his racing career is over, Nagl intends to stay involved in motocross by passing on his experience to younger riders, and hopes to help a rider reach the top level of MXGP in the future. He also expressed strong interest in moving into car racing. During his career, Nagl rode for manufacturers including KTM, Honda, Husqvarna and TM.
