Motorola's GrapheneOS phones set to launch in 2027, priced above Pixels
GrapheneOS developers are working on support for upcoming Motorola devices that will launch in 2027 and cost more than Google's Pixel phones. The higher price stems from the need for costly Qualcomm 8-series chips, currently the only Qualcomm processors meeting the security bar.

Developers of the privacy-focused GrapheneOS are preparing support for future Motorola phones, but these devices won't arrive until 2027 and are expected to be priced well above the Google Pixel phones that currently serve as GrapheneOS's only officially supported hardware.
The steep pricing comes down to technical requirements. GrapheneOS has relied on Pixel phones because Google's Tensor chips provide the security features the project needs. Not all Qualcomm chips offer comparable capabilities — only Qualcomm's most expensive 8-series processors match up from a security standpoint, and those chips are reserved for premium flagship phones.
Foldables may be next
Motorola skipped releasing new versions of its standard, non-folding Edge phones in 2026, and if that pattern continues, the 2027 GrapheneOS-ready devices could turn out to be foldables. That would help account for the high prices, alongside broader component cost increases driven by AI-related demand. Most of Motorola's recent flagship releases have in fact been foldable phones.
Motorola's budget-friendly Moto G lineup isn't a candidate for GrapheneOS support, since its mid-range Qualcomm chips don't receive the necessary level of support unless manufacturers pay extra for it. Motorola also only commits to a couple of years of software updates on its budget phones, which falls short of what GrapheneOS requires.
Developers say cheaper Motorola phones could theoretically gain GrapheneOS support eventually, but not anytime soon. Motorola hasn't publicly confirmed a launch timeline for the new devices, though GrapheneOS is expected to be ready for them at launch. Installing the OS requires some technical know-how, and the project currently offers a web-based USB installer for Pixel phones — similar tools are likely to be provided for the Motorola devices as well.
