Musk's faster route to gas turbines brings a pollution trade-off

Elon Musk confirmed on Saturday that a secretive facility SpaceX has been building in Bastrop, Texas, is a foundry meant to cast gas turbine blades and vanes in-house — responding to a report from The Information that cited job listings and land-purchase research from analyst Corey Trinetti.

Musk explained on X that SpaceX and Tesla are each racing to build 100 gigawatts a year of solar production capacity, but natural gas will still be needed for years to supplement and bootstrap solar power. He said the real bottleneck in turbine manufacturing is casting the blades and vanes, and that producing them in-house could cut up to 18 months off the time it takes to bring new gas turbines online.

Why it matters

The move addresses a growing constraint on AI infrastructure: electricity supply. The International Energy Agency projects global data center power use will roughly double by 2030, while turbine maker GE Vernova says its production capacity is essentially sold out through that year. As a result, hyperscalers including Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft have increasingly turned to building private gas plants next to data centers rather than waiting on grid connections.

Casting turbine blades is notoriously difficult: they operate at temperatures hotter than the melting point of their own metal alloy, relying on internal cooling channels and thermal coatings, and must be grown as a single unbroken crystal in a vacuum furnace. Only four companies worldwide currently manage this at industrial scale, and all are at capacity. If SpaceX succeeds, it would give a Musk-controlled company a manufacturing edge that rivals depending on that small oligopoly currently lack.

The pollution concern

Faster turbine production also means more turbines running sooner, and existing ones are already drawing scrutiny. In Memphis, where SpaceX has run gas turbines to power its Colossus data centers since 2024, the NAACP has repeatedly alleged the company operates them without required permits or pollution controls, in an area already burdened by industrial pollution. University of Memphis researchers found air quality there had grown slightly worse. In Virginia's data center corridor, a study using the EPA's health-impact model estimated that emissions from just one facility's eight turbines could affect more than 2.5 million people and cause several additional premature deaths annually, with tens of millions of dollars in associated health costs.
