One of Latvia's Last Legionaries Laimons Ezergailis Passes Away

On 3 August, a ceremonial volley echoed over Lestene Brothers' Cemetery as Laimons Ezergailis, a Latvian legionary and public figure, was given his final farewell. He passed away at the age of 102.

Ezergailis was one of the last legionaries in Latvia, a man whose life spanned a century and who personally witnessed and endured some of the darkest pages of the country's history. His death marks the end of an era – another living link with those events is now gone.

As a public figure, Ezergailis did not keep his experiences to himself. He worked to preserve and pass on his testimonies, enabling younger generations to gain a direct understanding of a period that today is known mostly through archives and retellings. Although his passing means the loss of yet another first-hand witness, the memories he shared will remain as a lasting legacy for future generations.
