Driver dies after car plunges into Lake Rāzna early Sunday
A man died when his Hyundai Santa Fe drove into Lake Rāzna in Rēzekne district early Sunday. Police are investigating. Across Latvia, 109 road accidents occurred in the past 24 hours, killing one person and injuring 26.

According to the State Police, at 1:38 AM on Sunday, July 5, on the Malta-Kaunata highway (P56) in Mākoņkalns parish, Rēzekne district, a male driver lost control of his Hyundai Santa Fe, left the roadway, and entered Lake Rāzna. The driver died at the scene. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation.
In the past 24 hours, Latvia recorded a total of 109 road traffic accidents, resulting in 26 injuries and one fatality. The highest number of crashes – 60 – occurred in Riga and its surroundings, where 14 people were injured. Latgale saw 20 accidents with five injuries, Vidzeme – 13 accidents with three injuries, Kurzeme – 11 accidents with four injuries, and Zemgale – five accidents with no injuries.
Among the injured were two pedestrians, two cyclists, and two e-scooter riders.
On Saturday, eight drivers were detained for drunk driving. Seven criminal proceedings were initiated because the alcohol concentration exceeded 1.5 per mille – one each in Kurzeme and Latgale, two in Riga, and three in Zemgale. In two cases, the vehicle was confiscated, and in five cases, the driver will be charged the value of the vehicle. One case resulted in an administrative process.
Over the past day, 431 administrative decisions were made regarding traffic violations, including 175 for speeding. The highest number of speeders was recorded in Vidzeme – 63.
