Narva hosts its first old-car contact racing competition
Narva held its first Narva Romuring contact racing event, where 48 drivers competed in specially prepared old cars in front of roughly 2,000 spectators.
The Estonian city of Narva hosted its first-ever contact car racing competition, called Narva Romuring, on Saturday, September 12. A total of 48 drivers took part, racing specially prepared old automobiles, while an estimated 2,000 spectators watched the event, Estonian broadcaster ETV+'s "Aktuaalne kaamera" reported.
How the race worked
The competition was held in several stages, and contact between vehicles was permitted during the race. As a result, some cars sustained damage in collisions and were forced to drop out of contention. Between stages, participants were given the opportunity to repair their vehicles. The winner was determined by the number of laps completed.
Winners
In both the men's and women's categories, first place went to a married couple from Jõhvi, Rainer Tiganik and Keiu Tärno. Tärno said that in this type of racing, tactics matter just as much as speed, noting that simply flooring the accelerator and driving forward would not have worked in her case.
Rainer Tiganik, for his part, pointed to the importance of taking care of one's car, saying that drivers tried to preserve their vehicles until the end of the race and avoid unnecessary risks.
Organizer's comments
Competition organizer Gleb Bogdanov said participants had traveled to Narva from various regions of Estonia. He noted that events of this kind can draw tourists to the city and demonstrate to young people that motorsport is a hobby that can be pursued without major financial outlay.
