Science Week has started in Narva, a city in eastern Estonia, offering schoolchildren a practical introduction to science and technology through experiments, games and workshops. The event is being held for the fifth consecutive year and is open to pupils of both basic schools and gymnasiums.

What is new this year

Tatjana Upeniek, the city's chief education specialist, told "Aktuaalne kaamera" (the news programme of Estonian public television) that the range of topics is broad, including biology, physics and various technologies. This year's programme features drone technology and a workshop on making solar panels. There are also new partners: study excursions have been organised to the NPM Narva magnet plant and to Enefit, a company with which the city already cooperates.

Offerings from non-profit organisations

Local non-profit organisations are also running their own educational programmes. One of them, the Narva Kant foundation, holds classes in history and archaeology and is introducing new directions this year. Board member Daniil Galitski said there will be two sessions. The first is devoted to palaeontology: pupils will see a collection and examine finds that the organisation excavates and cleans from local shale. The second covers the use of technical advances in research, in recording and studying finds, and in cultural heritage work.

Robotics at the college

Pupils can also try robotics this year at a recently opened robot-learning workshop at the Narva College of the University of Tartu.
