NATO official: Kremlin has no clear Plan B, signs of desperation
NATO Strategic Communications Director Brigadier General Jay Janzen states that Russia's strategy to restore its imperial influence is failing and that the Kremlin lacks an alternative plan, indicating desperation and increased danger.

Brigadier General Jay Janzen, Director of Strategic Communications at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), has stated that Russia is failing to achieve its main strategic goal of restoring influence and control over former imperial territories. According to him, this strategy is not viable, and Russia should seek a compromise or a Plan B. However, he noted that the Kremlin currently has difficulty envisioning what such a Plan B would look like.
Janzen believes the West should try to influence Russia to choose a predictable Plan B that would lead to a better future. He emphasized that NATO's deterrence posture remains effective, as no one has attacked the Alliance so far. Nevertheless, readiness is essential.
The general added that increasingly brutal actions in Ukraine and growing threats are signs of desperation. Russia's strategy is not working, and there is no obvious Plan B. He compared Russia to a wounded animal that becomes more dangerous. Instability will persist for many years, as evidenced by Kremlin propaganda in schools, where children as young as five are indoctrinated and prepared for mobilization.
Janzen urged allies to focus more on resilience and strengthening democracies rather than solely on the other side. He stressed that it is worth fighting for a common vision of NATO's future, and that fight begins today – with healthy democracies and informed, engaged citizens.
