Warnings without imminent risk
Despite fresh warnings issued by countries including Poland, Lithuania, France and the Netherlands, NATO currently sees no risk of an "imminent attack" on alliance territory.
Race for military committee chair
At the same time, a contest is underway for the chairmanship of NATO's Military Committee, with Germany's Carsten Breuer and Canada's Jennie Carignan competing for the position, one of the most influential military roles within the alliance.
Slovak doubts and EU-NATO tension
Slovakia's populist Prime Minister Robert Fico has again cast doubt on NATO's mutual defense clause, arguing that the West's approach toward Russia and continued support for Ukraine increases the risk of war.
Additional friction has emerged from new European Union security proposals that would grant the EU greater crisis decision-making powers and the ability to convene emergency talks. Officials warn these proposals risk overlapping with NATO's mandate, raising concerns about a possible turf war between the two organizations.
