NATO announced on Thursday a new platform that will let its 32 member states buy vetted counter-drone equipment more quickly. It works like an online store, with products available for purchase or long-term lease.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance of 32 countries, announced on Thursday, 5 November 2026, that it has created a new platform. Its aim is to help member states acquire proven and reliable equipment against unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, more quickly.

Claudio Palestini, NATO's head of innovation and technology adoption, said the alliance is offering a very simple system that resembles an online e-commerce store.

How the equipment was chosen

Officials explained that, following a public tender and an evaluation period lasting several months, NATO selected the equipment it considers the most effective and cost-efficient. The products are made by companies from the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States. Member states can buy them or lease them over the long term.

The equipment costs up to 28 million US dollars. It is intended to protect borders and strategically important sites, and the offer covers a range of technologies, including electronic jammers and interceptor drones.

Why it is needed

NATO members, including the Baltic states, Romania and Poland, have repeatedly faced drones entering their airspace. Until now, the alliance has had to use jet fighters and fire expensive missiles to bring down far cheaper drones. Officials say this approach is not economically viable in the long run.

The new platform is meant as a simpler and cheaper solution, allowing countries to obtain suitable defence equipment faster.
