The number of security incidents along the eastern edge of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the military alliance of European and North American states, is growing. This indicates that Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine increasingly endangers the borders of NATO member states as well. For that reason, the article stresses that NATO must strengthen its resolve to deter Russia.
Two incidents within a week
First, NATO aircraft in Lithuanian airspace shot down a drone that had flown in from Belarus. A week later, on 23 September, a Russian military helicopter that had taken off from Kaliningrad, a Russian region lying between Poland and Lithuania, briefly entered Polish airspace.
Not isolated cases
Neither incident can be regarded as isolated. Their growing number shows that the effects of the war are no longer confined to Ukraine but are reaching the borders of NATO countries. This trend is the basis for the call to reinforce deterrence against Russia.
